Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is an important part of recovery from heart procedures and surgery.
Inpatient cardiac rehabilitation begins while the patient is still in the hospital and provides a customized program of non-strenuous activities and education. A rehabilitation nurse or exercise physiologist assesses each patient’s risk factors, educational needs and activity levels.
Phase 2 cardiac rehab is an EKG monitored exercise and educational program for individuals with cardiovascular disease. Those with stable angina, recent bypass surgery, heart transplant or peripheral artery disease (PAD) will benefit from this program. A multidisciplinary team, including the medical director, nurses, exercise physiologists, registered dietician and pharmacist works with each individual to design a customized exercise program and behavior modification plan to reduce cardiovascular risk factors. Family members are included. Patients must be referred by a physician. Reports are sent back to that physician.
During phase 2 of pulmonary rehab, patients with lung issues (COPD and restrictive lung disease) are supervised by the medical director, nurses and exercise physiologists monitoring EKG, blood pressure and oxygen saturation as they gradually increase their activity levels. Nurses, exercise physiologists and respiratory therapists provide education on breathing techniques and ways to conserve energy to perform daily activities. Dieticians and pharmacists provide nutritional and medication education. Family members are included. Patients must be referred by a physician.
Participants at the wellness level program may continue the program they began in phase 2 or they may enter the program directly with a physician referral. Individuals exercise independently in a supervised program that continues to promote a healthier way of life and healthcare management.
