Cookeville Regional Medical Center Outpatient Therapy, known as “the blue roof,” now offers a pre- and post-mastectomy rehabilitation program for breast cancer patients.

“We are excited about this program for our patients. Recovering from surgery or going through breast cancer treatment affects your life, both the daily tasks but also work and activities,” said Monyca Champion, CRMC Occupational Therapist, Certified Hand Therapist, Certified Health and Wellness Coach. “For those recovering from mastectomies or getting ready for surgery, our occupational therapists are here to support you with a holistic approach that addresses physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs.”

A physician referral is required to begin the rehabilitation program, but after the patient is established, the treatment begins.

“Once a patient is referred to us by their physician, we begin a comprehensive evaluation and talk about personalized goals to create the best plan for the patient,” said Champion. “Our prehab program involves therapy sessions before surgery to perform baseline tasks and provide education to decrease the risk for physical and functional impairments. The post-mastectomy program is more in-depth, offering a range of motion, strength training, scar management, self-care, pain and stress management, etc.”

CRMC’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Post-Mastectomy Program includes:

  • Range of motion and strength assessments
  • Establishment of appropriate exercise programs
  • Scar management and desensitization programs to decrease risk of painful and sensitive scarring
  • Self-care management to help you work through challenges with performance of daily activities such as showering, grooming, food preparation, etc.
  • Energy conservation techniques to help you navigate life while avoiding fatigue
  • Relaxation techniques, including progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing techniques, mindfulness, and meditative practices
  • Exploration and education on the use of adaptive clothing and devices for greater ease of activity performance
  • Lymphedema assessment and treatments
  • Pain management (non-pharmacologic)
  • Stress management and coping skills
  • Sleep assessment and treatment to promote quality sleep necessary for restoration and healing of your body
